Materials expertise that moves the world – this is Schunk Sinter Metals
Schunk Sinter Metals stands for more than 100 years of experience in powder metallurgy and sintering technology. We develop and manufacture high-precision sintered metal and MIM components for the automotive industry, e-mobility, aerospace, defense, and industry – worldwide, in series, with a quality standard that accepts no compromises. As part of the Schunk Group, a global technology group with around 10,000 employees in 26 countries, we combine the strength of a global player with the specialized depth of a materials expert.
What sets us apart
The starting point of every development at Schunk Sinter Metals is choosing the optimal material. That's because the specific properties of the finished component are largely determined by the raw material and the sintering process – not by post-processing. Our materials know-how spans the full spectrum of iron-based alloys, stainless steels, copper- and bronze-based materials, soft magnetic composite materials (SMC), as well as special materials such as tungsten alloys. We don't just know the materials themselves – we master their interaction with the sintering process, with heat treatments, surface finishing, and the operating conditions once installed.
We see ourselves not as an extended workbench, but as a development partner. We get involved in our customers' product development as early as possible – through simultaneous engineering, joint material selection, and component design based on the net-shape principle. Potential sources of error are identified and eliminated as early as the design phase, before they become costly. This partnership doesn't end with series release: we support our customers throughout the entire product lifecycle. Some of these partnerships have already lasted several decades.
A central element of our materials expertise is the DAkkS-accredited Friedrich Eisenkolb testing laboratory – a fixed part of our quality assurance and materials development for over 60 years. It supports the entire process: from the characterization of new material formulations to component qualification and ongoing series monitoring. Our manufacturing processes are certified to IATF 16949. 100% component inspection for safety-critical components, SPC-monitored processes, complete batch traceability, and a zero-defect philosophy are not just an aspiration here – they are lived practice.
Our production sites in Gießen and Thale form the technological heart of Schunk Sinter Metals – with over 100 years of accumulated manufacturing expertise and the accredited testing laboratory on site. Complemented by our site in Mexico, we are also able to serve North American customers with short delivery routes and local technical support. This combination of a European manufacturing base and global reach is the result of a long-term growth strategy that treats customer proximity and supply security as equally important.
