Components for industrial applications – precise, economical, reliable

Industrial systems run around the clock, under heavy loads, and often under conditions that quickly push conventional materials to their limits. Schunk Sinter Metals meets these requirements with two complementary manufacturing processes: axial pressing for high volumes and metal injection molding (MIM) for geometrically demanding precision components.

Two manufacturing processes – one point of contact

Axial pressing is the proven standard process for simple to medium component geometries in high volumes. Press forces from 30 to 8,000 kN, outstanding process stability, and economical large-scale production make it the process of choice for gears, bearings, cams, and functional components that need to be manufactured in the millions.

Metal injection molding (MIM) unlocks geometries that axial pressing cannot achieve: undercuts, threads, wall thicknesses as thin as 0.4 mm, and three-dimensional free-form surfaces – straight from the process, without costly post-processing. In series production, MIM components reach densities of minimum 96% and higher, along with mechanical properties comparable to forged parts.

Industrial application areas

Mechanical & plant engineering

Transmission and kinematic parts, valves, dosing systems, pump components, and precision mechanics for automation and robotics applications – manufactured with axial pressing or MIM depending on geometry and volume. Sintered parts made from iron-based alloys achieve tensile strengths of over 1,300 MPa – fully competitive with conventional steel parts at significantly lower manufacturing cost. Self-lubricating sintered bearings operate with low maintenance even in hard-to-reach installation positions.

Hydraulics & pneumatics

Miniaturized valve bodies with complex internal channel geometries, valve seats, valve needles, spools and pistons for spool valves, as well as dosing elements and nozzles – all manufactured using MIM. The combination of geometric freedom and tight tolerances makes MIM the ideal manufacturing technology for compact hydraulic and pneumatic components that would otherwise be costly to produce with conventional processes.

Automation & robotics

MIM-manufactured robot joints, precision gearboxes, grippers, and drive components in cobots and industrial robots – complex geometries, tight tolerances, and reproducible quality for modern automation systems.

Power engineering & power electronics

Heat sinks with complex micro-geometries, busbar connectors and current contacts, housing components for power modules, as well as EMC and shielding components for IGBT and SiC modules – all manufactured using MIM. MIM is particularly well suited here because high current densities require complex cooling geometries that are barely economical to achieve with conventional processes. At the same time, MIM enables the integration of multiple functions into a single component with high dimensional accuracy, even for small structures.
