Climate targets for 2030

Environmental Sustainability
at Schunk Group

As an internationally active technology partner, Schunk assumes ecological responsibility along the value chain. Our production processes, products, and technologies are geared toward environmental compatibility, resource efficiency, and energy conservation. We focus on clear goals, verifiable measures, and a holistic climate strategy—out of conviction and with impact in the three focus topics of climate protection & energy, technological contribution to climate protection, and environmental protection.

Our roadmap for climate protection and energy by 2030

Schunk is pursuing climate targets with a clear deadline: By 2030, we want to significantly reduce our direct CO₂ emissions, massively expand the share of renewable energies, and measurably improve climate indicators in all areas. The focus is on energy-efficient processes, innovative materials, and climate-friendly operations. This is how we contribute —technology-based, binding, and transparent.

How we intend to reduce our emissions

Climate protection & energy

The goal: 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030

Our greenhouse gas calculation is a central component of our sustainability strategy and enables transparent monitoring and control of climate impacts along the entire value chain. The calculation is performed in accordance with the international standard of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG).

One goal of the climate strategy is to reduce the ecological footprint of our sites, i.e., Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, by 50% by 2030 compared to the base year 2018.

Our action plan

Improving energy efficiency

The goal: a 1% increase in energy efficiency per year. Continuous improvement in energy efficiency has been an ongoing task for us for decades. As part of our energy management, we constantly work on identifying and utilizing energy efficiency potential. Many sites have had a certified energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 for many years. We have set ourselves the goal of increasing our energy efficiency by 1% annually.

Optimization of production processes

As a company, we attach great importance to continuously making our production processes more sustainable. Typical measures we implement include increasing energy efficiency through modern machinery and equipment, using renewable energies, optimizing the use of materials and resources, and reducing waste and emissions. In addition, we rely on circular economy concepts, digital process control to minimize waste, and sustainable logistics solutions to continuously improve our environmental balance.

Investments in building infrastructure

We invest specifically in the modernization and optimization of our building infrastructure in order to increase energy efficiency and use resources sustainably. This includes measures such as the installation of energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and control systems. With these investments, we not only reduce the ecological footprint of our sites, but also create sustainable, economical, and comfortable work environments for our employees.

Formation of an energy network

We bring together our experts from different fields to pool knowledge, experience, and innovative ideas. Through interdisciplinary exchange, we identify potential for increasing efficiency, develop joint strategies for sustainable energy supply, and implement concrete measures for future-proof production. In this way, we strengthen our internal competencies and actively drive forward the energy transition within our company.

Our action plan

Renewable energies

We are consistently focusing on renewable energies in order to make our industrial value creation more sustainable. By using solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources, we are measurably reducing emissions. At the same time, we are increasing the energy efficiency of our production processes along the entire value chain. In this way, we are taking responsibility for the environment, society, and a sustainable industry.

Purchase of green energy

We are continuously increasing our use of renewable energy. In doing so, we rely on both physical use and certificates of origin. Certificates of origin are seen as a temporary solution and will be phased out gradually in the future. In return, we rely on power purchase agreements (PPAs), i.e., electricity purchase agreements with wind or solar parks.

In-house green energy generation

We invest specifically in our own renewable energy generation facilities, continuously analyze the potential of our sites—for example, through rooftop photovoltaics—and implement these measures on a long-term basis with a team of experts.

Combined heat and power plant

We rely on combined heat and power plants as part of a decentralized, highly efficient energy supply and, in addition to the electricity generated, we also use the waste heat produced specifically for heating buildings and to support our production processes.

Our action plan

Substitution of fossil fuels

The targeted substitution of fossil fuels is a central component of our sustainability strategy and contributes significantly to reducing emissions and securing our energy supply in the long term.

Conversion of production processes from fossil fuels to electricity

We are replacing fossil fuels with electric power in order to reduce emissions and make the production process more sustainable. The use of electricity enables better integration of renewable energy sources and increases the energy efficiency of our plants.

Utilization of waste heat potential

We use heat pumps to efficiently utilize the ambient temperature for heating and cooling our buildings and production facilities. This technology significantly reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to conventional heating systems.

Charging stations for electric cars

We provide charging infrastructure for electric vehicles at our major locations. In this way, we promote environmentally friendly mobility for our employees and reduce CO₂ emissions from company transport in the long term.

Technological contribution to climate protection

As a leading technology group, we use one of our greatest strengths to tackle the environmental challenges of our time: innovative strength. This has been our hallmark since the company was founded and continues to produce new solutions focused on environmental sustainability – for a greener future.

More and more customers are looking for products with the lowest possible climate impact. The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) creates transparency and helps us deliver climate-optimized products to our customers.

As part of our sustainability strategy, we are creating PCF calculations for selected products along the cradle-to-gate system boundary. This is based on a company-wide guideline that is aligned with the ISO 14067 standard.

Environmental protection

Protecting the environment is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. We reduce environmental impact along our value chain by continuously optimizing processes, using resources efficiently, and avoiding material waste. Clear structures, standardized processes, and the targeted use of modern technologies help to reduce emissions and use raw materials responsibly. In this way, we combine economic activity with ecological responsibility and make a sustainable contribution to environmental protection.
