A Special Seminar to Kick Off the Career Journey at Schunk

At the end of their first year, Schunk apprentices take part in a unique highlight: the social education week. It’s five days dedicated not just to technical knowledge, but to collaboration, responsibility, and personal growth.

The seminar is hosted by the HESSEN METALL education institute at its training center in Bad Nauheim. Schunk covers the entire cost of participation – including accommodation, meals, and fees. Each year, apprentices from multiple Schunk sites across Germany come together – from Heuchelheim to Oldenburg, from Willich to Thale. In 2025, a total of 78 apprentices took part.

“It’s truly rewarding to see how much our apprentices grow during this week. They make new connections, and through the varied content and business simulation, they really come together as a team – across locations and professions.”
Laura Weidmann, Head of Vocational Training

What the Social Education Week Is All About

The goal of the seminar is clear: to help young professionals build a solid foundation as they step into the working world. The focus lies on developing social skills, a strong sense of values, and the ability to navigate a diverse work environment with confidence.

Key topics include:

  • Teamwork, motivation, and decision-making
  • Communication and professional presence
  • Democratic values and social responsibility
  • Understanding economic and political frameworks

Learning with Head, Heart, and Hands

The content is hands-on, relevant, and varied. Learning takes place through modern, interactive formats that not only convey knowledge, but also build trust and cooperation within the group:

  • Business simulations and role-playing
  • Open discussions and experience sharing
  • Partner and group exercises
  • Keynotes and practical workshops

A clear favorite every year is the TopSim business simulation. It challenges participants to make strategic decisions in teams and experience firsthand how business dynamics and teamwork go hand in hand.

Beyond the Classroom: Cultural and Social Connections

Alongside the educational content, there’s plenty of time to connect on a personal level. A cultural and social program offers space to relax, have fun, and get to know each other better. It’s not unusual for friendships to form that last well beyond the seminar – and across locations.

Voices from the Apprentices

Emely:
“Social education week was a great break from our daily work routine. I really enjoyed the TopSim simulation – it let us think creatively and work independently. Plus, I got to know a lot of other apprentices from different sites.”

Hannah:
“I learned how essential teamwork is. It was great spending the week with apprentices from other locations. We shared experiences and learned a lot from each other.”

Looking Ahead: What’s Coming in 2026?

The program continues to evolve. In 2026, topics like media literacy and mental health will be added – making the content even more relevant to the real-world needs of our apprentices.

Conclusion: More Than a Seminar – A True Kickoff to Professional Life

The social education week reflects what matters at Schunk: teamwork, mutual respect, and the willingness to take responsibility. It’s more than just a seminar – it’s a meaningful step toward building a strong and confident start to a career.
