ALUMINIUM GRAPHITE COMPONENTS FROM SCHUNK CARBON TECHNOLOGY

Aluminium graphite components - lighter than metal, more durable than copper

Aluminium Graphite (ALG) is a metal matrix composite that combines the thermal properties of graphite with the mechanical strength and machinability of Aluminium. Schunk Carbon Technology offers aluminium graphite in three grades—ALG1808, ALG2007, and ALG2208. All grades share the following characteristics: their CTE is well-matched to semiconductor materials and ceramic substrates; their thermal conductivity ranges from 180 to 220 W/m·K—depending on the grade and orientation—and their density, at 2.2 to 2.3 g/cm³, is far lower than that of copper (8.9 g/cm³), CuW (15.6 g/cm³), or CuMo (9.8 g/cm³).

Base Plates & Heat Sinks

Aluminium graphite base plates, heat sinks, interposers, and inlays are used wherever power modules must be operated in a thermally stable and reliable manner. The well-matched CTE reduces thermomechanical stresses at the solder joints between the chip and the substrate. In a comparative study of thermal shock behavior (-40 °C to +125 °C), ALG base plates showed no delamination even after 2,000 cycles—copper base plates failed after 1,000 cycles.

Heat Spreaders

Housings, heat spreaders, and submounts made of aluminium graphite are used in microelectronics and optoelectronics, as well as in RF power packages and laser assemblies. Many of these assemblies suffer from thermally induced stresses that arise both during assembly and in operation. Aluminium graphite eliminates these stresses thanks to its well-matched CTE. At the same time, the material conducts heat faster than conventional heat spreader materials such as aluminium or copper—which improves the assembly’s thermal performance during operation and increases its service life and reliability.

Soldering Fixtures & Tooling

Aluminium Graphite jigs, fixture sets, and carriers are used in semiconductor assembly—from lead frame attach to die attach and substrate attach. ALG1808 is the preferred grade for carrier plates when fast and uniform heat transfer is required—regardless of whether conduction, convection, or radiation is used as the heating method. ALG1808 and ALG2007 are particularly suitable for jigs used to position and align solder preforms, substrates, and semiconductor devices, as they offer higher mechanical strength and abrasion resistance and maintain tight dimensional tolerances over many cycles. Hybrid solutions combining Aluminium graphite and metal, Data Matrix codes for full traceability, and pins for camera recognition systems are available.
