Impregnated Materials

Optimize the base

Impregnated materials

The porosity of carbon graphite, graphite materials and metal graphites can vary over a wide range depending on the material. Often, however, impermeability to fluids is required. Impregnation can reduce or completely eliminate this porosity. At Schunk, impregnation is usually performed using a vacuum-pressure process. Impregnation can be carried out with synthetic resins, metals and salts. Re-impregnation with carbon is also possible (AllCarbon).

What distinguishes our impregnated materials?

Our impregnations are used to refine mechanical components for the required tribological applications. In the case of electro-technical carbon brush materials, we optimize the mechanical properties and open up the possibility of responding to special climatic conditions (e.g. air humidity) or environmental influences (e.g. sulfur or salt water). The coefficient of friction and the radio interference behavior are also influenced, as is the electrical conductivity, for example in materials for shaft voltage dissipation. Q-impregnation - i.e. salt impregnation - increases the oxidation resistance of thermal components.

Where are our impregnated materials used?

In the Mechanical area, our impregnated materials are used in all tribological applications and in a wide variety of media. In the Electrical sector, these are primarily carbon brushes and the dissipation of shaft stresses. The Q-impregnation in the Thermal area is particularly aimed at increasing oxidation protection in the range from 400 to 900° C (short term temperature peaks), which makes the material ideal for the glass industry.
